The Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMSc) degrees are four-year undergraduate degrees offered jointly by the Faculty of Science and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. This degree program is designed for students interested in advanced study in the basic medical sciences and focuses on all aspects of biology that define and influence the human condition.  Emphasis is placed on understanding the normal human condition, mechanisms of current treatment and the search for cures.

The basic medical science disciplines include:

  • Anatomy and Cell Biology
  • Biochemistry
  • Epidemiology and Biostatistics
  • Medical Biophysics
  • Microbiology and Immunology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology

Anatomy and Cell Biology

The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology offers modules in Medical Cell Biology.  Learn the gross anatomical features of all the human body systems, understand how cells in the human body interact when forming tissues, maintaining homeostasis and regulating behaviour.

Biochemistry

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Biochemistry

Study the molecules and mechanisms essential to life. An emphasis is placed on understanding the structure, function, and regulation of biomolecules as they relate to the molecular basis of disease. Apply state-of-the art approaches and equipment to the many diverse areas of modern biochemistry that include molecular genetics, structural biology, signal transduction, chemical biology, and bioinformatics.

Courses   |    Modules/Programs   |  Why study Biochemistry?

Epidemiology and Biostatistics

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Epidemiology & Biostatistics

Develop skills to contribute to health policy by providing data relevant to health promotion and illness-prevention programs. Study areas concerned with the determinants and distribution of diseases in human populations while discovering new statistical methods for collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.

Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences

Enjoy the flexibility of the Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences modules with access to courses offered by all of the Basic Medical Science departments. Gain a greater understanding of the interrelationship between the basic medical sciences in the investigation of a clinical disease.

Courses   |    Modules/Programs   |  Why study IMS?

Medical Biophysics

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Medical Biophysics

Aid medical diagnosis and therapy through the application of mathematics and physics. This field includes cardiovascular biophysics, orthopedic and soft tissue mechanics, MRI, CT and ultrasound imaging for diagnosis and radiation biophysics for cancer treatment.

Courses   |    Modules/Programs   |  What is Medical Biophysics?

Microbiology and Immunology

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Microbiology & Immunology

Discover how the immune system protects us from infections micro-organisms and cancer cells to maintain our health, yet can cause disorders like autoimmune diseases and allergies. Learn about antimicrobial therapies, vaccine strategies/challenges and lab techniques used to identify bacteria and measure immune health.

Courses   |    Modules/Programs   |  Why study Microbiology and Immunology?

Neuroscience

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Neuroscience

The Undergraduate Program in Neuroscience provides training in neuroscience with an emphasis on its diversity of questions, approaches and methods, critical evaluation of current research, and opportunities for research experience in the senior year of the program.

The Honours Specialization in Neuroscience leads to a Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours degree granted by the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.  Enrolment in the module is limited beginning in Year 2 and meeting the minimum requirements does not assure admission.

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

Build on a foundation of normal anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology and physiology to look at the structural and functional changes that occur in human disease. Learn about human illness that can also result from adverse effects of biological and chemical toxins, environmental pollutants, and occupational exposures to toxins.

Courses   |    Modules/Programs   |  Why study Pathology?

Physiology and Pharmacology

View a past Virtual Fall Preview Day Presentation:  Physiology & Pharmacology

Learn how the human body works - from the smallest cells up to complex organ systems. Physiology courses and research span the whole spectrum of living organisms, from events at the molecular level right up to the entire human body. In Pharmacology, study how drugs act on biological systems to modify physiological functions in health and disease. Discover the adverse effects of both drugs and chemicals on humans and other biological systems and learn how technology is an integral part of risk/safety evaluation.

Physiology Courses   | Pharmacology Courses   |    Modules/Programs   | Why study Physiology or Pharmacology?
